When you go into a new band, name is key. At least at first. You see, if you see a band with a powerful, simple name, you can latch onto it and say “_____ fucking owns.” It’s that simple. When I was introduced to Power, I immediately heard that their music falls directly in with their sound: they are Powerful. Their Black Flag-influenced hardcore is a thundering array of stunning aggravation. I recently caught up with vocalist Evan Somerhiser and I am stoked to premiere a song off of the bands upcoming release Heavy Muscle. Get chu some.
Simple first question: Who is Power?
Power is a bunch of friends who have been playing in punk bands together since we were kids. Benn plays drums, Griffin plays guitar, Rick plays bass, I do vocals.
How and when did the band come together?
We started my senior year of high school, ’07-’08. I wanted to record a demo tape for my senior project, so Benn wrote and recorded everything and I sang. It was a really half ass project. We decided we should try making it a real band and got Rick and Griffin on board and played our first show at the Crab Shack, a crummy punk house in Bremerton.
Tell me about Heavy Muscle. Was it an easy writing and recording process?
The writing is always easy. Benn is a riff master. Phil Jones who recorded us at The Dangler made everything go so smoothly. We recorded instruments live. We also left in some voice cracks and squeaks to make it as raw as possible.
I think we all hear Black Flag in your sound. That much is clear. The question is, what is your favorite Flag album?
The benefit record for the West Memphis 3.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
The ability to read minds. I could take all the Power money and enter the World Series of Poker so all the boys could retire.
What’s up next for Power?
Tour. We have a short West Coast tour coming up in June. Then we’re doing a full US some time this summer.
Heavy Muscle will be released on July 10th via Twelve Gauge Records.
