Review: A FUCKING ELEPHANT-“Seven Inches”

By Lane Oliver

Such a ridiculous name as A Fucking Elephant is sure to garner a lot of odd looks. But their name works to their advantage because the music this band creates reflects the absurdity of their established name. If you have not been introduced to A Fucking Elephant yet, let me get you two acquainted. A Fucking Elephant is a two piece  instrumental math rock band based out of New Jersey, whose split with El Drugstore is a must listen for anyone who likes a little drug induced violent rock n’ roll. It was spastic and dissonant in all the right places. Their new seven inch release, appropriately titled Seven Inches, increases the drug dosage and hysteria and begins to place the bands’ feet in the direction of new, wacky territory.

On Seven Inches, the band considerably slows the pace down a notch in order to focus on the more dissonant moments that were explored on their split with El Drugstore. The release begins with “I am Addicted to Drugs & Sex and I Want You to Choke Me”, a very dizzying affair. “Drugs” revolves around a cavalcade of slightly dissonant riffs that cycle around each other and create an almost psychedelic atmosphere that is as enthralling as it is dizzying. These fat, dope soaked guitar lines are just dripping with drug induced mania and psychosis. Also, the raw, erratic nature of the drums brings more out of the song’s mentally unstable character. The B-side to this release, “A Bunch of Good Looking Roundeyes”, is an exercise in mind alteration. This track is even wackier and trippier than the first. The song bursts in with rolling, vomit inducing guitar tapping and thunderous drum fills. The initial spastic blast breaks down into a bouncing groove that oozes swagger. The track eventually flows into a dissonant yet melodic bridge full of jarring guitar tapping and eventually the song ends in a disjunctive sounding, maniacal collage of riffs. Seven Inches mere seven minutes is enough to keep you tripping for days. There aren’t any high velocity tracks like “Just the Tip” on this one, but sacrificing jaw dropping speed for jaw dropping musical complexity and strange atmospheres was definitely a smart move on A Fucking Elephant’s part.

I am anxious to see A Fucking Elephant does next after hearing this absurdly catchy and compelling release. These two, short pieces of music are complex, playful, noisy, psychoactive and will keep you tripping for days. So find that perfect vein and shoot yourself up with some A Fucking Elephant today! You will not be dissatisfied.
